Secretary of
State comes through |
Synonymous with youth
oriented activities and a desire to involve itself in
community affairs, North Shore Youth Services has once
again been successful in obtaining a Student Community
Service grant from the Secretary of State's office of the
federal government. The summer
of '75's grant will he directed by Barbara Moss and Russ
Williams, under the banner of North Shore Voluntary
Action Project.
|
Funds will be used
in the continuation of community work during
the summer months. The Student Community Service
Program is designed to strengthen and further
develop voluntary organizations by improving
their capacity to respond to changing community
needs and by channelling the energy and
imagination of youth into the voluntary sector. A spokesman for NSYS said that the staff
of the organization will work in various areas of
the community this summer on a two-phase program.
The first aspect will focus on animation and data
collection. The animation phase will assist
community members to design and initiate
special-interest programs.
On the agenda are programs
designed for children, clinic-type health
programs, youth activities, programs for young
women and family participation programs.

|
|
The second phase of the
program will zero in on collecting data relevant
to the status of voluntary action of the North
Shore. This will take the form of an extensive
look at voluntary needs and resources available
in the community, with the objective of
establishing a true picture of the balance in
types of volunteer projects, as well as
discovering existing gaps in the overall picture.
|
|
|
It will, according to an NSYS
spokesman, also involve initiating volunteer
groups around some of the community's
special-interest programs. "We're looking forward to an
interesting and exciting summer," the
spokesman continued, pointing out that the staff
is currently involved in contacting various
agencies and individuals in the community as well
as participating in an on-going training and
development program supported by the West island
YMCA.
The spokesman suggested that
anyone interested in further information about
the program, or interested in participating,
should telephone the North Shore youth Services'
office at 683- 8690.
