Project workers outline North Shore Youth Services

An enthusiastic group of project workers from the North Shore Youth Services addressed a gathering of Westpark Home and School Association members at a general meeting on January 12th to discuss the aims of the North Shore Youth Services and their individual and collective contributions. The young representatives were John Salvis, Bob Vokey, Allan Fryer, David Udell and Jim Whitehead. Bill Pigott, Director of Community Services for the West Island Y.M.C.A., was also in attendance. Mr. Pigott works closely with the youth-orientated programs on the North Shore,

Outlining the aims and objectives of the project, which was founded over a year ago and is a citizen operated project, the workers pointed with pride to the two referral centres established in the North Shore's two local high schools; Riverdale and Pierrefonds Comprehensive. The centres are student manned and designed to assist young people wrestling with such problems as drugs, parental tension, medical problems, etc.

At present, the North Shore Youth Services operates two resource centres - one at the Roxboro United Church and the other at the Roxboro chalet. Both facilities offer teens the opportunity to drop in and "do their thing" whether it be tie-dying, debating, studying or just relaxing.

Following the presentation by the group, the meeting broke up into smaller groupings where members of the North Shore Youth Services discussed the project with interested parents and answered many questions. The youth workers clearly identified with members of the audience, several of whom indicated they would he interested in visiting the resource and referral centres to see the N.S.Y.S. in action.
