North Shore Youth Services - The Real Story, by: BIG John

It's time to dispel myths surrounding the formulation of NSYS. We must stop perpetuating untruths and face the harsh reality that there were not 3 stars. Most of what Bill tells you is just YMCA rhetoric - propaganda. The truth looks different from over here.

Some things Bill says are true. The 70s were a turbulent time and we were in the midst of a an enormous "youth rebellion".

As can be seen in the photo above, I didn't have to look far before coming across 2 of the most "at risk" personalities you'd ever want to meet - Alan Fryer and Bob Vokey..

The photo was taken in front of the NSYS office . . . which was around the corner from Roxboro United Church - site of the original Coffee House and program centre. It was while sitting on the curb, in front of the church, that NSYS was actually really born.

After hours of discussion and endless debate, here's two alienated young people stood up, - shed their beer bottles, sun glasses and glass beads - to become before my very eyed Indigenous Street Worker - whatever that means. Hallelujah.

Alan was the 1st one to go out and begin working with young people - young boys as a matter of fact. Though he was pleased with the results of this leadership training endeavour, the rest of us were concerned click here.
